The 4 skills you learn whilst studying abroad and how they can help you start a business after University

Being a University student is a great time in life. You’re young, you’re free, you have very few responsibilities - the world is your oyster. Below we’ve listed 4 skills you’ll learn when studying abroad and how they help you start a business after University.

1. You learn to adapt

Studying abroad means having to adapt to a new environment including culture and language. Having this skill is great for when you graduate and start business where you are also thrown into a new environment.

2. You learn to navigate the unknown

Regardless how much research you do about your study abroad destination beforehand - the internet is never a substitute for the real live experience of studying abroad and you are bound to have to deal with many unknown factors. Being able to deal with uncertainty is an especially handy trait if you are thinking of starting your own business after graduation.

3. You learn to deal with people from different backgrounds

You may have been surrounded to people similar to you all your life up until now (parents have similar income to yours, same school, same hobbies, you go to the same holiday destinations, etc). You may have even chosen a University fairly close to your home. Studying abroad whilst in University is a great way to dive into a completely new environment and meet people from all different backgrounds. Being able to not only get along but also understand people from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds will help you identify different problems that need to be solved, which is the base for any business start-up.

4. You learn to be independent and self-reliant

Moving abroad is the ultimate test in self-reliance. Depending on time-zone differences you can’t easily ask your parents or friends at home for help and you’re forced to make decisions independently. Being self-reliant and able to make decision independently is extremely important if you are thinking of starting a business after graduation. In the beginning you might not have the right network with mentors available to you who can help you along the way and if you want to make your business a success you need to have faith in your own abilities.
